Today’s stock market outlook starts with an anniversary: the U.S. bull market turned four on Monday, Oct. 12, 2026, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq coming off record highs set last week. The next test arrives fast. Six of the largest U.S. banks report third-quarter results on Tuesday and Wednesday, the September Consumer Price Index lands Wednesday morning, and Brent crude is still trading above $100 a barrel despite a newly announced Russia–Ukraine “energy ceasefire.”
U.S. stock exchanges are open for normal hours on Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples’ Day, but the bond market is not: SIFMA recommended a full close of U.S. fixed-income trading for the holiday. Below is what investors are watching this week, with verified facts separated from forecasts and commentary.
Stock Market Outlook: Where Things Stand Monday Morning

Big Bank Earnings Open Third-Quarter Reporting Season
Bank results usually kick off earnings season. They give an early read on consumer credit, loan demand, deal-making, and trading activity in a period of high interest rates. This week’s schedule:
| Day | Companies reporting |
|---|---|
| Tuesday, Oct. 13 | JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM), Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS), Citigroup (NYSE: C), Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC) |
| Wednesday, Oct. 14 | Bank of America (NYSE: BAC), Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS) |
What analysts are watching (forecasts, not results)
- Net interest income: Long-term yields have climbed above 5%. Banks can earn more on new loans when yields are higher, but higher deposit costs and unrealized bond losses can offset those gains.
- Credit quality: Watch loan-loss provisions and card delinquencies. Fuel prices are at autumn records, which squeezes household budgets.
- Investment banking and trading: Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley are most sensitive to merger, IPO, and trading volumes.
- Consensus snapshot: Pre-earnings previews compiled by TokenPost point to double-digit year-over-year profit growth at JPMorgan and Wells Fargo and roughly 10% revenue growth at Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley. These are analyst expectations, not company guidance.
CPI and PPI: The Inflation Data That Could Move Rates
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics release calendar:
- Wednesday, Oct. 14, 8:30 a.m. ET: Consumer Price Index and Real Earnings for September 2026
- Thursday, Oct. 15, 8:30 a.m. ET: Producer Price Index for September 2026
- Friday, Oct. 16, 8:30 a.m. ET: Import and Export Price Indexes for September 2026
Monthly retail sales data is also expected midweek. Diesel and gasoline prices have been at record highs for the season, so energy will feed straight into the headline CPI figure. The 10-year Treasury yield was near 5.3% a week ago (see our Oct. 5 investor outlook). That puts more attention on core inflation, which excludes food and energy.
Oil: An “Energy Ceasefire” Headline Meets a Tight Market
What was announced: On Sunday, President Donald Trump said on Truth Social that an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine was in effect. On Oct. 9, the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control issued a general license authorizing transactions in Russian-origin diesel through April 7, 2027, The National reported. Moscow did not confirm the truce. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv was waiting for details from Washington.
How prices reacted: According to The National, Brent fell 1.3% to $103.35 a barrel early Monday and WTI fell 1.4% to $90.55. Both then reversed and were up about 1.1% by midday in the Gulf, with Brent near $105.87. Quartz reported that traders doubted the truce would hold or meaningfully add supply.
Analyst commentary
- UBS’s Giovanni Staunovo told The National that 300,000 tonnes of Russian diesel for the rest of October equals about 100,000 barrels a day. That would only partly offset lost seaborne diesel exports.
- S&P Global Commodity Insights analysts said they see “the immediate market impact as limited.”
- Goldman Sachs raised its December Brent forecast to $90 from $85. The bank estimates that geopolitical tension adds slightly more than $20 a barrel to prices.

Other Catalysts on the Radar
- Middle East risk: Yahoo Finance reported that Trump suggested the U.S. could join Saudi Arabia in strikes on the Houthis after a deadly weekend attack on a Saudi airport. Developing.
- Global bond yields: Yields are rising worldwide, with France’s bond market under particular pressure, according to Yahoo Finance.
- AI concentration: According to Yahoo Finance, an “old economy” index excluding AI-related stocks is up about 5.5% this year, close to Europe’s STOXX 600. AI-linked shares account for much of the S&P 500’s gain.
